Purpose

I have recently discovered the reason why pregnant women wear overalls--regular pants don't fit and maternity pants, with nothing to grab onto but gravity, fall down. Overalls stretch out and hold on not by any usual pant-holding mechanism like hips or butts but via the sturdy, steadfast, non-morphing shoulders.

Would that I would be caught dead in them. But who knows? Maybe the sheer physics of the pants will persuade me?

I had the most awesome overalls. They were L.L. Bean or something and they were big on me (I got them before I was pregnant! For no reason!) and then I wore them when I was pregnant. I loved them. I think I maybe even outgrew them. But I think I chucked them, post pregnancy. But man, I loved those!! Don't forget what I said about the fat boy Levi's, which I also loved and chucked.

I cannot promote the wearing of overalls. I bought a pair of pants from Motherhood Maternity (the one that's in every mall) that I wore throughout my whole pregnancy. I was reticent to spend money on maternity clothes, but it was well worth the $40 or $50 I paid for them. (Full disclosure: my mom paid for them). They are those kind with the elastic top that can be pulled over your belly or rolled down. Those things seriously work. And I got one pair of maternity jeans, too, with the same system. (Read: mom bought those as well).

Also, those casual, knee-length jersey skirts with the roll-top from Target work, too - not maternity ones - just the regular. I bought a medium so that it would be snug enough to stay up.

i got some of those motherhood pants and they rock. i also dig skirts for the maternity-ness too. skirts are always too big for me because my hips are way bigger than my non-existent waist, so i can still--sort of--wear my regular skirts. they fit, but they get shorter by the day. pregnant and slutty--nice.

I used bella bands to help hold my pants up. :-) They work at various stages, too -- in early pregnancy, you can just unbutton your regular jeans and wear a bella band with them. In middle pregnancy, they help hold up maternity pants. Even in late pregnancy, depending on the pants. :-)

I second the knit skirts - I bought a bunch of them from Ross Dress 4 Less when I was pregnant. But I sure do like the thought of you wearing overalls!!!!
